November 19, 2013

Looks like things are getting hotter for the Romero's Rejects.  We played again tonight at Las Trojas on Hwy 53.  I picked up Steve and we arrived early so we could get a good table.  Not that there are any bad tables in the whole place, but we enjoy not having so far to walk after a long day.  Then Mark arrived and shortly after that Mike came in and Angie too.  We placed our food and drink orders and readied the table with pens and napkins for writing down the questions.  We kicked off Round 1 with how many reindeer pull Santa's sleigh, counting Rudolph.  Now I bet every one of you are running through the names right now.
“Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen!  There you have it for a total of 9 as the correct answer.
We enjoyed messing with Owen who had arrived late and telling him that we totally blew the 6 point question and put down 7 instead :)
Our team loves to joke around with each other and after playing together for a couple years now, we do very well on team spirit.
I think it was the first time we had a Movie category that we all had no idea what the answer was.  Who knew that there was a movie coming out called "Frozen"?  Not any of us, we are all waiting ever so patiently for

'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'

However, given that the question was for Frozen, here is you a link to this cool looking movie as well:  http://movies.disney.com/frozen
It did make us laugh that after we missed the question, we see the advertisement for it on the corner tv, but a little to late to help us out.

Round 2 we were sure to know
Ron Rivera, the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.  He also appeared on screen shortly after the question was over.  At least this one we knew!
In Round 3 we knew all 3 of these.
I think there was some confusion as to who
Leif Ericson was and who Erik the Red was.  Below is my understanding that it is Father and Son.  Which is not the same person as some teams thought.

  • Leif Ericson

  • Leif Ericson was a Norse explorer regarded as the first European to land in North America, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus.

  • Born970 AD, Iceland

  • Full nameLeif Ericson

  • NationalityIcelandicNorwegian

  •  It took a bit of math for us to get the UNO question correct, yet we pulled it off.  Having at least 3 or 4 sets of UNO cards here and something that I play with our family often, it was just a matter of adding.  A deck of Uno cards consist of 19 blue cards, 19 green cards, 19 red cards, 19 yellow cards, 8 draw cards, 8 reverse cards, 8 skip cards, 4 wild cards, 4 wild draw cards. All together that is 108 cards

In classic Films, the question was who played the Tinman in The Wizard of Oz?
      This was none other than
John Joseph "Jack" Haley (August 10, 1898 – June 6, 1979) was an American stageradio, and film actor best known for his portrayal of the Tin Man in the now-classic film The Wizard of Oz. In the same film, he also played Hickory, one of the three farmhands that Dorothy, in her "dream", imagines as the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.

Moving on to Rapid Round 4, we picked up another 10 points for knowing who Moose is.

In Rapid Round 5,  we gained yet another 15 points with the correct PEOPLE answer and THINGS.  Now as for the things category,  That was the iRobot Roomba.
Everyone will love this little machine.  I bought one years back and turned it on just before going to bed.  This was both good and bad.  Having fallen asleep before it made it's way into the hallway near the bedrooms, the bumping of the door almost scared me to death.  Once I had figured out it was just the robot cleaning up the floors, I was okay.  I must admit, it is one of the best inventions for clean floors!  Here is a link for anyone looking to find one of these little genies http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_4?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=irobot%20roomba&sprefix=irob%2Caps%2C209

We went into the final round in 3rd place.  The category was : Oh Canada so we were all in with 20 points.  Owen knew the answer by the time the question was being read.  I just smiled because I was sure that we were going to place tonight.

Here was the correct answer to the Final Round winning us 1st place for a 2nd week in a row!!!

  • Manitoba
    Canadian Province

  • Manitoba is a Canadian prairie province. The province, with an area of 649,950 square kilometers, has a largely continental climate, with thousands of lakes and many rivers.

  • So there you have it.  Romero's Rejects taking the lead with 81 points.

And in 2nd place with 74 points is the team "Suck It Trebek".  I've noticed the name now for a few weeks.   Learning fast they are, be careful we must (said in my best Yoda voice)

I'm going to leave you all with this last comic strip.  Until next time my Friends

    November 12, 2013

Playing tonight was:  Steve, Mark, Mike, Angie, Owen and myself.  We played at Las Trojas.

The starting off question was:  What is Plankton's first name in the show "Spongebob"?  Now given that most of those all have him being yelled at as Plankton, I had no idea his first name, until I heard the answer called out.  Sheldon J. Plankton would be correct.  Here is one of the best ones about Plankton: http://youtu.be/cxWRKwGc3WQ

We aced rounds 2 with no problems.  Carl from the Walking Dead was one of the answers.  The thing most people don't know about him is that his body double for the show is a young lady.  So look closely when he is wearing that hat next time :)

In Round 3, we had a perfect score with Mark knowing that the first name of Det. Hutch was "Ken"

The half time question was about shortest to longest flights from Nashville TN.  We flipped the 2 in the middle and made us miss those, yet got all the others in the proper order.  The correct order was:  New York, Miami, Denver, San Diego and Seattle.

This put us in the running with 36 total points on the board.  Bad Idea was only 4 points ahead for the lead.

In Rapid round 4, Arts:  We missed this one.  Here was the correct answer for what is located at 1071 5th Ave, NY NY.  http://www.guggenheim.org/

In the category of Science Fiction: Steve knew that the correct answer was Isaac Asimov.  For any of you wanting to read RunAround, Here you go:  http://www.gobookee.org/out.php?q=isaac+asimov+runaround&t=2&c=0

We held on in Rapid Round 5 to score a perfect 18 points and move into the Final round in 2nd place.

"Things" was the Final category.  After the question was read, we decided to go with a 0 bid.  We thought we might know it, yet were not sure.  Having 69 point and knowing that team "bad idea" was ahead at 76 points.  This could be a possible win.  Since we play against them often, it's good to know how they bid in the past.  We held our own and let them go all in.  Thus giving us the final lead in first place.  It sure felt GREAT to take 1st!

That's all for tonight my friends, hope to see each of you again soon.

    November 14, 2013

On a last minute decision, I decided to head over to Las Trojas and play some trivia with Paul as the host.  He always does a good job and certainly has the voice for a microphone.  I called up Steve and he is on call at work, yet took enough time to come out and play too.  It was 19 teams in the all racing for 1st place.  So rather large teams and a few 2 person teams as well.  It is a whole different group than the ones we play against on Tuesday nights there.  We started out with a perfect score in round 1 and again in round 2.  However Round 3 proved to break our pride a bit.  I really need to learn some sports besides Bama Football...LOL.  It also would have helped to know what 1973 movie starred Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand.  http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/263781/Way-We-Were-The-Movie-Clip-It-s-Always-Bad-News.html

We did alright on the half time question and had 8 teams ahead of us and had passed the other 12 teams.  So we moved into the Rapid rounds with a fighting chance.  Scoring all 3 of those answers correctly.  Having heard the crowd get quite on the Winnie the Pooh question, we knew that we made a little more progress toward winning.  The question was, What birds home was blown away in Winnie the Pooh?  It might help to have it on video as I do.  It's the one called The Blustery Day.  I'm sure you all know the answer now :)

We blew Rapid round 5 and thus tanked our hope at a winning score tonight.  I did not know where the Negev Desert was located, however this would have helped as a clue:

I learned there is a fish that climbs trees & rocks.  This would be a Mud skippers, seen here: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/kids/animals-pets-kids/fish-kids/mudskipper-kids/

A fact we should have known was in 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes had the first telephone installed in the Mansion telegraph room of the White House.

Our final question of the night was What land animal has the largest heart?

This would be the one and only animal that needs it to pump all the way up the neck.

Our score tonight was not enough to beat the tough team "Loki's Brother"  who had an amazing time holding the lead though out the entire game.  It was fun and I needed the stress break after my day today.

Last and certainly not least, it was good to see Super Man playing tonight, even with the team "Kryptonite" playing against him.

I had a really good night of fun and that is what I play trivia for.  So win or lose, I'm happy to have had the chance for some time to relax and play.  I'm closing this one out and I hope to catch up the story from this past Tuesday, which was a real Blast of fun with the whole team!

Thanks to Paul our host and to Las Trojas for giving prizes.  I should also Thank BrainBlastTrivia for a good mix of questions.  This was the controversial question of the night:
  • Prince Harry of Wales
    Military officer
  • Prince Henry of Wales, commonly known as Prince Harry, is the younger son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and his first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales. His paternal grandparents are Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

  • Good Night All, See you tomorrow
