June 29, 2015

We played at Casa Blanca (next to best buy) hwy 72 in Hsv.  On the team is Anthony, David, Nick and myself.  The host was in a bit of a rush, as she was in the door and out the door within an hour.  We had a friendly guessing game of what her after plans were, but who really knows.  We enjoyed the fastest paced game that we have played in the last few years.  I personally like a slower paced game, as it makes getting the notes down a bit better for the blog.  In which I sometimes make the time to get done. I think in about 7 weeks, I should be able to start catching things up on here.  Well enough of the chatter, it's time to go over the game.

Round 1:

Movies - The Star Wars question was an easy one.  R2D2 is the sidekicks name.

TV - In Married with Children, the dogs name is Buck.  However the dog was originally called Mike.

Music - Lee Greenwood...God Bless the USA.  This one is also listed on Youtube as being called "I'm Proud to be an American".  While it's still the same song and an awesome song at that.  It isn't what's listed on the album.

Round 2:

Space - Halley's Comet

History -  We over thought this answer.

Classic Film - The King and I.  This answer was in the clues that were posted earlier on Facebook.

Round 3:

Presidents -  Taft, Bush sr and jr, Clinton and one other President attended Yale?  The correct answer was Ford.  He attended University of Michigan in 1937 and was accepted to Yale in the Spring of 1938.

Words - Beam

Sports -  Lou Gehrig's Farewell speech.  For those interested, here is the full speech; July 4, 1939

Half Time:

Name the 5 most populated cities in Australia
Sydney
Melbourne
Brisbane
Perth
Adelaide

At the end of Half Time, we are in 1st place with 2 teams close behind.

Rapid Round 4:

Actor - Richard Kiel (movie JAWS)

Sports - The Braves game that lasted until almost 4am was against the  Mets / Cubs / Astros?

Literature -  Gadsby.  I didn't know this and found it enjoyable to read today. A Story of over 50,000 words without using the letter E
However, Anthony did know it and we were able to get it correct.

Rapid Round 5:

Song Lyrics - Love's got a hold on me was the lyrics to "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop

Military - How many stars does a Brigadier General have....That would be 1 star Sir...HOOAH

Classic TV - This one I wish I had known, since I've seen every single episode at least once.  On the show "The Walton's"  What is Grandpa Walton's first name?  It's Zebulon or Zeb for short.  In the German release of the show, it's Sam.  Now I question if Nick has a secret about watching shows in German, as this is not the first time he has known the correct answer in a different version.  A question I must ask him soon.

Final Question:

The Category was Colleges and the correct answer was Columbia.  All this went so quickly that I didn't write down anything about the question itself.  We bid the max on points and knew that we had sealed the fate of a 1st place win with 90 points.

2nd place was 55 points
3rd place was 41 points

Next week we will be playing at the Boot on South Parkway on Tuesday night.  We are switching up some nights for a couple of reasons.  It allows more people a chance to join in and also gives us some different locations to go out and visit.  Thanks for taking the time to read and keep up with us.  See you all again soon.

May 26, 2015

On the team is:  Anthony, Kristine, Nick and myself.  We are playing at The Boot Pizzeria on south parkway.  You are going to get a short version of the game, from my not so good notes.

Before I get started, I would like to properly Welcome Kristine to our team and I hope she enjoyed it enough to come back and play again when she is in town to visit.

Round 1:

Grant is on the $50 bill

Lester Holt is news anchor for NBC nightly news weekdays

State Flag with a pelican
Round 2:

Iraq

Star Wars answer is Greedo :"Han shot first" is a phrase referring to a controversial change made to a scene in Star Wars (1977), in which Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is confronted by the bounty hunter Greedo (Paul Blake) in the Mos Eisley cantina. The change was made for the 1997 Special Edition re-release of "Star Wars", and has since been altered twice more. The phrase "Han shot first" is misleading, as Greedo does not shoot at all in the original version of the 1977 film.

Round 3:

Sports: Sun Valley is famous for it's Skiing

Movies: 1987 Over the top movie was about a trucker who arm wrestles on the side.

Classic TV:  I love Lucy's husband was a singer

Half Time:

Name the 5 tallest buildings in the U.S

One World Trade Center
Willis Tower
Trump Tower Chicago
Empire State Building (which is also the oldest of the 5)
Bank of America tower

We had a perfect score until the half time question.  We Didn't think of the Trump tower in chicago, we used Aon Center instead.  Which was number 6 on the list of No points for it.

Rapid Round 4:

We only missed the Geography question.

Rapid Round 5:

We talked ourselves out on the correct answer in Literature, it was the 3 Laws of Robotics

The Final Question was History:

What month did the Titanic Sink?

Since Owen isn't here, I'll say it for him:  Everyone knows that!  It was April 15th of 1912.
As a result of this event, within a year there were new safety rules and the International Ice Patrol was formed.

1st place went to GCC with 91 points
We took 2nd place with 90 points (thanks to having talked ourselves out of one of the correct answers)
3rd place goes to RocketMan

It was a fun night playing at the Boot.  See you next time!

Romero's Rejects Sets an all time high record!

Good Evening Everyone,

I'm going to try and give everyone a short history lesson about the team, but first I have a confession to make.  The excitement from June 2nd is still hard to contain.  Just typing out the post title made me smile all over again!  As a team, we've been playing for 4.5 years of trivia.  We started out playing by chance and then returned again and over the years there have been many of the guys (male and female) who have played at different times.  We've played different locations in AL & TN.  Over the years as we play we have come so close  to a perfect score as to only miss a 2 or 3 point question.  Once we were doing Awesome all the way up to the Final Question and blew it.  So as the game went on and we continued to get every answer correct, the excitement was growing.  As a general rule, I try not to get overly excited about most things.  But I was unable to contain it by the last part of the game.  The guys I was playing with were the BEST!  Wait, I mean, they ARE the best!  On the team that night was:  Anthony, Mike, Nick, Owen and myself.
Well I will get on with the Q & A part of the post now.

Things:  According to the Mohs scale, which is harder?  Quartz or Steel.

People:  Who was the first woman elected Prime Minister of Britain?

Movie:  In alphabetical order, who would be the first of Snow White's dwarves?

TV theme Songs:  "Yo Holmes, smell ya later" is a line from which TV theme song?
Here's a little hint:  The cab driver in the opening sequence is the executive producer of the show.  His name is Quincy Jones

Movies:  How many movies make up the Twilight saga film series?

Fictional characters:  In the novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, what was the hunchback's name?

Places:  What famous building would you reach if you dialed (202) 456-1111?
How many of you just dialed it to see?

Money:  What was the former monetary unit and coin of the UK, equal to a quarter of an old penny?

Olympics:  T or F, tug of war was once an Olympic sport?  I'll flat out give you this answer.  It's TRUE.  we missed it a couple years back when it was asked.  I'm thrilled we got it right this time!

Half Time Question:  What were 5 of the 6 categories in the original Trivial Pursuit Genus Edition?

We are holding a none beatable score this far into the game.  Team Buzz is fast on our heels.

Sports:  What 2 teams are playing for the 2015 Stanley Cup?

Movies:  Which London suburb is also the name of a film starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts?

Space:  Which 2 planets in our solar system have no known moons?

Moon:  When referring to lunar phases, what is the opposite of waning?

Classic Rock:  In 1975, what singer or group put out the album, Welcome to my Nightmare?

Monuments:  Waht male figure is credited with having the most monuments erected to him?

This one took us a bit to think on but we got it right with Buddha.

AZ has the most in the world, if I remember that correct.  However you may want to look that up and see if I'm right or not.

Now before we do anything else, it's score time!
In 3rd  right now is "Doesn't Matter" with 69 points
In 2nd, Team Buzz with 74 points
We are alone at the top!!!!  At this point, I have no focus myself, yet all the confidence in the world in these guys to pull this off.  It's difficult to sit still and I'm thankful that I haven't had anything with sugar in it today!

Presidents:  Who was the only man to serve both as President of the United States and Supreme Court Justice?

Congratulations to each of you.  You have just read through the making of History for our Team!

 Romero's Rejects

Team Buzz (pictured below)
A note about this team.  We have been playing against them for more than a year now, if I recall correctly.  They played against us in other locations as well.  Always an honest team and I need to find out a little more about them before long.  I can say without a doubt, they are a good team.  When we see them, I know it's going to be a night of fun competing with them.

In 3rd place was "Hooker" and they jumped from near the bottom to 3rd on the final question.  beating out 2 other teams to take the win.
** Please note that I don't take much time to write out the entire name of teams, I write 1 or 2 words in the name and I go with it.  So the team names might not be exact to what they wish to be known by.  I'd say that I will do better about that in the future, however, I have NO plan to do that.  I'm happy with the simple part.  So if you want the name right in future blogs, keep it simply for me.** end of disclaimer...lol.

Last yet certainly not least.  I'd like to say Thank You so much for the prizes that Sidelines gives away at each game.  Take a moment to visit and Like them on Facebook

Thanks also to Chris and Ronni Bell for hosting every week and building up the amount of teams.

That's it for me.  It's another night of trivia, because it took me a week of trying to find time for the blog.  See you all again tonight, where we will bring our A game to win a 2nd week in a row!

A review of the winnings from Cinco de Mayo

Hey Everyone,

This is going to be a short blog post.  I wanted to say THANKS to Anthony and Nick from the team.  As you saw in the last blog, we won 2 prizes on Cinco de Mayo while playing at The Boot Pizzeria on south parkway.  One of those was a $40 certificate for a Banner and the other was $35 Adrienne's Salon.  The guys let me keep both prizes and I tossed around a few ideas of what to do with them.  This week, I took the banner certificate to Copperhead's Outdoors in Arab.  He doesn't have a banner and to be honest, I have gone out of town to get anything Archery related because I didn't know their was a business in town that carried those supplies.  So I stopped in for a visit and at first I think he thought that I wanted to sell him a Banner.  The look on his face when he realized I was simply giving him the free coupon was priceless.  As I was leaving, he told me that anytime my daughter wanted to use the indoor range this summer, there was no charge.  Now since she has made it to World, I'm thrilled with her being able to go in there and practice!  So it certainly worked out as a great benefit that I'm thankful for.

This past Thursday, I went to lunch at Carson's in Hampton Cove and had a nice meal.  It was my first time to visit there.  I shared an interesting conversation with a man who had served in the Vietnam war.  He talked some about his life now and the group therapy and how it had helped him with the PTSD.  He introduced himself by his first name and then told me that most of his friends just call him Gator.  Then showing me the tattoo on his upper right arm.  A few others sitting at the bar joined different parts of the conversation as we all ate at the counter.  The waitress was a young woman named Emily.  She was very courteous and seemed to know each of the regulars who sat down.  We spent some time talking and then it was time for me to go.
The nice thing is that I wouldn't even have been in that area if it weren't for the guys letting me have the coupons.  I left there and went to Adrienne's.  Where they did a great job with my being pampered and relaxed.  I enjoyed hearing about the business, learning how it was started and who's who.  My stylist was Adrienne herself.  She did a great job at making me feel comfortable and sharing stories back and forth as she work.  It seemed like no time at all and she was done.  I walked out with a credit, hair that felt Amazing and a feeling of happiness.  Sorry for the look in the picture, I was focused on getting the sign to line up and the sun was brighter than I had thought.  It's certainly a place I will go back and visit.

Thanks again to the guys on the Romero's Rejects Team for making my day so GREAT!
I really wouldn't have taken this time out if it weren't for your generosity.  I'm truly Thankful.

Happy Cinco de Mayo

It's a bit late and I first thought I was going to sleep right away, however my mind can't seem to shut down tonight, so I'm going to go ahead and start the blog for tonight.  As I'm sure this one is going to have some a few errors, so just go ahead and plan to over look them :)

We played trivia at The Boot Pizzeria on south parkway.  It was Nick, Anthony and myself playing.  We were surprised to hear that first place was $250, second place was $75 and third was $25.

Round 1:   Cartoons, State Capitals and Nascar.

Droopy was created in 1943 by Tex Avery.  If you don't remember, here is a short clip for you
The capital for Vermont is Montpelier, which is the smallest state capital in the US.
Dale Earnhardt Jr won 1st place at Talladega Superspeedway this past weekend.

Round 2:  Classic TV, Weapons and Literature

Season finale named "Good Bye, Fair Well and Aman" was MASH.
The Chicago Typewriter is the "Thompson machine gun or Tommy Gun"
Victor Hugo wrote the 1831 novel of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with the main character being Quasimodo.

Round 3:  Movies, Sports and Airplanes

Tommy Lee Jones played Deputy U.S. Marshall Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive
The 2015 draft answer was the Navy
A Boeing 727 has 3 engines.  It's Boeing's only tri-engine aircraft.

Half time:  Musical Axe Men

John Entwistle played for The Who
Stu Cook played for Creedence clearwater
Dusty Hill played for ZZ Top
Berry Oakley played for Allman Brothers
John Taylor played for Duran Duran

At this point in the game, we are in 1st place and feeling pretty good.  Maybe a little to Proud.

Rapid Round 4:  Mexico, Africa and South America

The Mexican state that borders New Mexico and Texas is one that we missed.  We should have said Chihuahua.

Africa's largest country is Algeria and it's smallest is Seychelles.
Argentina is the 8th largest country in the world

That last round was not our strong area.

Rapid Round 5:  Comic book villains, Painters and TV

Obadiah Stane was an arch enemy of Iron Man
Monet painted Impression Sunrise.  You can read more about it here: Enjoy
The name of the garage in "Fast and Loud" was Gas Monkey Garage.  I didn't think I had ever seen this, however by looking it up, turns out.  I've actually watched a couple of these eps. when I couldn't sleep at night.  For those of you who want to see it,  I'll make it easy for you.  Click Here

Final Question is Colleges

What state has 2 Ivy league schools:  That would be New York

We finished tonights game with a score of 77.  This put us in 2nd Place.  With Bar Flies in 1st with only a 6 point lead.  3rd place was Smoke and Mirrors at 58 points.

It was a fun night and the pizza was GREAT!

Thanks to the guys for coming out.  The game is fun, yet the friendship with these guys is Awesome!

That's it for trivia tonight and I know I should get some sleep now.

March 30, 2015

Hey Everyone,

Long time no see.  Well it's been a lot of ups and downs and well.....Life happens.  Today's blog may be a bit different due to my state of mind and working while writing.  As many of you who know me will agree, my brain skips from topic to topic without so much as missing a heart beat.  So before I have to delete again, let me get started.

Last nights trivia game was a lot of fun.  I was lucky enough to be joined by my friends Mike, Nick and Amanda D.  We had fun playing at Casa Blanca in Madison with our hosts Chris and Ronnie.

Round 1:   Characters, Words and Sports.

I enjoyed the character question, as you will all know the answer by this song:  Who sings this song?
The sports question Nick knew and didn't need a moment to think about it.
As for the words, well, we missed that one and after hearing the answer, we should have gotten it. The definition was:  A state of confused movement or violent turmoil.  It has to start with M and has 9 letters.  So without using google for the answer, I'll share this link and you should be able to figure it out on your own.  Good Luck

Round 2:   Ballet, Military and Time Zones.

A spinning turn of the body while balanced on one foot is  Pirouette
Lowest rank in the Marines is a Private.
The difference in time between NY & London is 5 hours.

Round 3:    Leisure, Literature and Learning.

Number of balls on the table when playing 8 ball pool?  16  don't forget you need the cue ball to play.
Mike and Nick knew the literature question right off, so that was good for us.
This is what DD actually stands for when listed after someones name,  Doctor of Divinity.

Half Time:

Now at half time, the rule was to list 5 movies that Robert De Niro was the star and was directed by Martin Scorsese.  Other than Raging bull and Taxi.  The interesting fact here is that these 2 people both grew up a few blocks apart in Greenwich Village area of Manhattan, yet never met until 1972.
The Godfather was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and that really messed us up.  We were certain of those, but alas, not correct.  Heat was directed by: Michael Mann

Rapid Round 4:    TV, Music and Things

Phil Robertson was a Quarterback who loved hunting a lot more than football.  He only played to keep his scholarship to which he did get a Masters Degree in Education.
A Countertenor is a type of classical male singing voice that is equivalent to that of the female mezzo-soprano.
With a value from 1-5, What does a Saffir-Simpson scale measure in strength?   A little study info for myself, go ahead and click

Rapid Round 5:   Mail, Internet and Elements

MS is Mississippi for those of you who pretend not to know.
When you see .ca in a web address, it stands for Canadian
MN in the periodic table stands for Manganese.  On average our body has about 12 milligrams

Final Question:   Places

Famous French Artist Paul Gauguin lived in Tahiti, where he painted "Ftata Te Miti".

Here are the Winner's in tonights game:

Addie Someone with 95 points
Team Blake with 89 points
Romero's Rejects with 80 points

It was good to see Michael and Suzanne from Crosswinds church drop by and see us for a few minutes out of there very busy lives.

That's it for now my friends.  I'll try and finish some of the other nights and post them later on.

Have a Great week!

Rocket City Rejects....First game of 2015

Rocket City Rejects is our team name when we play Challenge Trivia in Chattanooga.  Our host is Marc Michael.  Bryanna isn't feeling well, so we missed seeing her.  The others couldn't make the trip, so it's just Steve and Myself playing on our team.  This blog is going to be different than most of the ones I write.

The categories are a nice change to the usual ones we get in HSV.  The questions, food venue and knowing a couple teams here is a lot of fun.  I'm going to give you all a quick run down on the categories.

Government
Geography
Crime
Science
TV
Celebrities
Sports
Military
Languages
Movies
History
Literature
People
Authors
Country
and even a Star Trek / Quantum leap

As you can all tell, it's different, yet a lot like the same game.

By the end of the game,  we were doing okay.  Not the number one team, however we did manage to come in 3rd and only 19 points behind 1st Place.

Finished the night with these guys having a toast and then the drive back to Alabama.

BTW....Marc and Bryanna received the 2014 Trivia Host Awards for all their hard work.  This couple works hard together. If one of them is sick or double booked, they keep it going! That's dedication to the teams and the venues they book.
While I don't always attend their shows (only because of time & distance), I do love seeing them and reading the posts online about how the teams and venues are doing.  I'm hoping soon they open up several places in HSV so that we can play in a non smoking place.  I say several places because I like to switch up locations and foods.  If you guys haven't checked them out, you should.

Don't forget that Nationals with this company is in Vegas this year!  I can't wait for that trip!

Chattanooga Area Trivia

Well, that's it for me for a bit.  I wish you all a GREAT night and see you soon.

Final Game of 2014

It's the end of the year at last.....well that was really almost a month ago, but pretend with me for a few minutes that we have a time machine.

It's December 30, 2014 at The Boot Pizzeria on South PKWY.  In the corner is Steve, Anthony and myself.  (the rest of the team is MIA)
Paul was hosting.

Round 1:

Miss Piggy's love crush was Kermit the Frog
"Be all you can Be" is an Army Challenge...HOOAH
and Nick Jonas sings Jealous

Round 2:

There is 12oz in a can of soda
Mike Smith was the sports answer...Bet you all wish you knew what the question was huh?
We missed the Flag question, only because we misunderstood the question, thankfully it was only 2 points :)

Round 3:

We scored a perfect 12

It's half time at last!

Order up some more drinks and let's win this thing!!!

It's Movies 2013  for the category

In order:

  1. Frozen
  2. Iron Man 3
  3. Despicable me 2
  4. Hobbit
  5. Hunger games "catching fire"

Rapid Round 4:

Theme Parks, TV and

Rapid Round 5:

Travel -  Our answer was really this:  "Topless Beach is all the guys can remember",  they both talked about it and neither could remember the name we needed....but you can't blame them, it was a topless beach.
Sports -  Anaheim ducks
Soft Drinks - Dr. Pepper

At this point, we are in 2nd place and the Final Category is:  Characters

What "Wind in the Willows" character simply hates society?

With all the childrens movies I've seen, I still had no idea.  Since the guys didn't know either, we decided to take a guess and bid 0

For those of you who have never seen or heard of it, here's you a link...a life line we couldn't use: The Badger

In 1st place was:  Little Stallions

We held on to 2nd Place and

NYPD Blue took 3rd.

Here is another great team that plays at The boot against us:
they have some really good team spirit and sportsmanship.  So I wanted to include them in this last game post of the year.

It's been a lot of fun this year and the team has changed up off and on all year long.  It's Wonderful to have these guys take time out of their lives and come play!

See you all in 2015

December 2014 Final Games

I'm going to roll these all into one post, so it might be a bit long.  In other words, don't try reading this while driving home!

Dec. 9th.

We played at Las Trojas on hwy 53.  Players were:  Owen, Nick, Anthony, myself, Jason & his wife Heather.  This is Jason and Heather's first time playing with us.  Glad to have them joining in.
We started out great, missing 2 of the first 3 questions, yet getting a perfect score in round 2 & round 3.  I'm certain the sports question was only right because of the guys.

As to why there are no question and answers to this night:

It was the first time that I was told I should take a break and let the guys handle it.  Well maybe not in those words, they were nice about it.  The words were something like..... You don't have to be in control, let go and relax.  While I did enjoy my drink that night, I have no idea what the questions were.  The only one I remember for sure was this one.
The half time question was to put these movies in order:

Inception
Harry Potter & the deathly Hallows
Toy Story 3
Alice in Wonderland
Shrek Forever After

Now good luck to all of you who think you can put those in the correct order.  Was the question from oldest to newest?  In order of US box office hits?  In world wide grossing?
The game did end with us taking 3rd place,  Bad Idea coming in 2nd and our friends TEAM BACON taking home the 1st place prize!
Oh and a lot of fun with friends, which is the main reason I play.

Dec. 16th.

Our team played at The Boot Pizzeria tonight.  We had a good turnout for the game:  Myself, Amanda, Michael, Joanna, DuWayne, Sharon and Bill.

The questions were fun and I learned that the average beaver takes down 116 trees per year.

This is the answer to the game question:

Best picture Oscar of 2014 went to 12 Years a Slave and if you haven't seen it yet, you should.

I didn't know this creature was in the story "Alice in Wonderland.
click the link to read up on him.

The Mock Turtle

Half time:  Sports
Name the team these guys played on:

  1. Blake Griffin
  2. Felix Hernandez
  3. Sebastian Janikowski
  4. Sidney Crosby
  5. Bradley Wright Phillips
By the end of half time, we had a total of 34 points and in 2nd place so far.

We gained an additional 28 points in the 2 rapid rounds, yet it was not enough to win us the game. IF only we had bid 20 on the final question.  We knew the answer, yet were not confident enough to bid. Maybe next week.  It was still a lot of fun!

Dec. 23rd

We are back at Las Trojas and our team is:  Steve, Nick, Anthony and myself.    I'll give you all one guess about what the entire game is about?

Round 1 was about Silk hats, Dr. Seuss and The nightmare before Christmas.  Round 2 we only missed the first one and that was because I didn't trust myself enough.  In 1937 the first collectible Christmas stamp was a Rose.
We knew that Jacob Marley was the ghost of Christmas in "A Christmas Carol".
The Poinsettia originated from Mexico
St. Stephens Day is on December 26th
and to end the night, for the final question, we bid 18 and missed it.

The question was:  Where is Christmas Island?

Well Everyone, that's it for catching up tonight.  I have some work that needs to be done before midnight.  I hope you enjoyed this quick summery of a few weeks.  I'll try and do the Final Game of 2014 in the next post.  Have a good night and everyone stay warm.

Welcome to 2015

Hey Everyone,

I know, it's been months since I've took a moment out to do this.  I keep thinking my life is going to settle down some and yet it doesn't.
I'll try and do a couple of warp drive write ups soon.

See ya
