June 29, 2015

We played at Casa Blanca (next to best buy) hwy 72 in Hsv.  On the team is Anthony, David, Nick and myself.  The host was in a bit of a rush, as she was in the door and out the door within an hour.  We had a friendly guessing game of what her after plans were, but who really knows.  We enjoyed the fastest paced game that we have played in the last few years.  I personally like a slower paced game, as it makes getting the notes down a bit better for the blog.  In which I sometimes make the time to get done. I think in about 7 weeks, I should be able to start catching things up on here.  Well enough of the chatter, it's time to go over the game.

Round 1:

Movies - The Star Wars question was an easy one.  R2D2 is the sidekicks name.

TV - In Married with Children, the dogs name is Buck.  However the dog was originally called Mike.

Music - Lee Greenwood...God Bless the USA.  This one is also listed on Youtube as being called "I'm Proud to be an American".  While it's still the same song and an awesome song at that.  It isn't what's listed on the album.

Round 2:

Space - Halley's Comet

History -  We over thought this answer.

Classic Film - The King and I.  This answer was in the clues that were posted earlier on Facebook.

Round 3:

Presidents -  Taft, Bush sr and jr, Clinton and one other President attended Yale?  The correct answer was Ford.  He attended University of Michigan in 1937 and was accepted to Yale in the Spring of 1938.

Words - Beam

Sports -  Lou Gehrig's Farewell speech.  For those interested, here is the full speech; July 4, 1939

Half Time:

Name the 5 most populated cities in Australia
Sydney
Melbourne
Brisbane
Perth
Adelaide

At the end of Half Time, we are in 1st place with 2 teams close behind.

Rapid Round 4:

Actor - Richard Kiel (movie JAWS)

Sports - The Braves game that lasted until almost 4am was against the  Mets / Cubs / Astros?

Literature -  Gadsby.  I didn't know this and found it enjoyable to read today. A Story of over 50,000 words without using the letter E
However, Anthony did know it and we were able to get it correct.

Rapid Round 5:

Song Lyrics - Love's got a hold on me was the lyrics to "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop

Military - How many stars does a Brigadier General have....That would be 1 star Sir...HOOAH

Classic TV - This one I wish I had known, since I've seen every single episode at least once.  On the show "The Walton's"  What is Grandpa Walton's first name?  It's Zebulon or Zeb for short.  In the German release of the show, it's Sam.  Now I question if Nick has a secret about watching shows in German, as this is not the first time he has known the correct answer in a different version.  A question I must ask him soon.

Final Question:

The Category was Colleges and the correct answer was Columbia.  All this went so quickly that I didn't write down anything about the question itself.  We bid the max on points and knew that we had sealed the fate of a 1st place win with 90 points.

2nd place was 55 points
3rd place was 41 points

Next week we will be playing at the Boot on South Parkway on Tuesday night.  We are switching up some nights for a couple of reasons.  It allows more people a chance to join in and also gives us some different locations to go out and visit.  Thanks for taking the time to read and keep up with us.  See you all again soon.

May 26, 2015

On the team is:  Anthony, Kristine, Nick and myself.  We are playing at The Boot Pizzeria on south parkway.  You are going to get a short version of the game, from my not so good notes.

Before I get started, I would like to properly Welcome Kristine to our team and I hope she enjoyed it enough to come back and play again when she is in town to visit.

Round 1:

Grant is on the $50 bill

Lester Holt is news anchor for NBC nightly news weekdays

State Flag with a pelican
Round 2:

Iraq

Star Wars answer is Greedo :"Han shot first" is a phrase referring to a controversial change made to a scene in Star Wars (1977), in which Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is confronted by the bounty hunter Greedo (Paul Blake) in the Mos Eisley cantina. The change was made for the 1997 Special Edition re-release of "Star Wars", and has since been altered twice more. The phrase "Han shot first" is misleading, as Greedo does not shoot at all in the original version of the 1977 film.

Round 3:

Sports: Sun Valley is famous for it's Skiing

Movies: 1987 Over the top movie was about a trucker who arm wrestles on the side.

Classic TV:  I love Lucy's husband was a singer

Half Time:

Name the 5 tallest buildings in the U.S

One World Trade Center
Willis Tower
Trump Tower Chicago
Empire State Building (which is also the oldest of the 5)
Bank of America tower

We had a perfect score until the half time question.  We Didn't think of the Trump tower in chicago, we used Aon Center instead.  Which was number 6 on the list of No points for it.

Rapid Round 4:

We only missed the Geography question.

Rapid Round 5:

We talked ourselves out on the correct answer in Literature, it was the 3 Laws of Robotics

The Final Question was History:

What month did the Titanic Sink?

Since Owen isn't here, I'll say it for him:  Everyone knows that!  It was April 15th of 1912.
As a result of this event, within a year there were new safety rules and the International Ice Patrol was formed.

1st place went to GCC with 91 points
We took 2nd place with 90 points (thanks to having talked ourselves out of one of the correct answers)
3rd place goes to RocketMan

It was a fun night playing at the Boot.  See you next time!

Romero's Rejects Sets an all time high record!

Good Evening Everyone,

I'm going to try and give everyone a short history lesson about the team, but first I have a confession to make.  The excitement from June 2nd is still hard to contain.  Just typing out the post title made me smile all over again!  As a team, we've been playing for 4.5 years of trivia.  We started out playing by chance and then returned again and over the years there have been many of the guys (male and female) who have played at different times.  We've played different locations in AL & TN.  Over the years as we play we have come so close  to a perfect score as to only miss a 2 or 3 point question.  Once we were doing Awesome all the way up to the Final Question and blew it.  So as the game went on and we continued to get every answer correct, the excitement was growing.  As a general rule, I try not to get overly excited about most things.  But I was unable to contain it by the last part of the game.  The guys I was playing with were the BEST!  Wait, I mean, they ARE the best!  On the team that night was:  Anthony, Mike, Nick, Owen and myself.
Well I will get on with the Q & A part of the post now.

Things:  According to the Mohs scale, which is harder?  Quartz or Steel.

People:  Who was the first woman elected Prime Minister of Britain?

Movie:  In alphabetical order, who would be the first of Snow White's dwarves?

TV theme Songs:  "Yo Holmes, smell ya later" is a line from which TV theme song?
Here's a little hint:  The cab driver in the opening sequence is the executive producer of the show.  His name is Quincy Jones

Movies:  How many movies make up the Twilight saga film series?

Fictional characters:  In the novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, what was the hunchback's name?

Places:  What famous building would you reach if you dialed (202) 456-1111?
How many of you just dialed it to see?

Money:  What was the former monetary unit and coin of the UK, equal to a quarter of an old penny?

Olympics:  T or F, tug of war was once an Olympic sport?  I'll flat out give you this answer.  It's TRUE.  we missed it a couple years back when it was asked.  I'm thrilled we got it right this time!

Half Time Question:  What were 5 of the 6 categories in the original Trivial Pursuit Genus Edition?

We are holding a none beatable score this far into the game.  Team Buzz is fast on our heels.

Sports:  What 2 teams are playing for the 2015 Stanley Cup?

Movies:  Which London suburb is also the name of a film starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts?

Space:  Which 2 planets in our solar system have no known moons?

Moon:  When referring to lunar phases, what is the opposite of waning?

Classic Rock:  In 1975, what singer or group put out the album, Welcome to my Nightmare?

Monuments:  Waht male figure is credited with having the most monuments erected to him?

This one took us a bit to think on but we got it right with Buddha.

AZ has the most in the world, if I remember that correct.  However you may want to look that up and see if I'm right or not.

Now before we do anything else, it's score time!
In 3rd  right now is "Doesn't Matter" with 69 points
In 2nd, Team Buzz with 74 points
We are alone at the top!!!!  At this point, I have no focus myself, yet all the confidence in the world in these guys to pull this off.  It's difficult to sit still and I'm thankful that I haven't had anything with sugar in it today!

Presidents:  Who was the only man to serve both as President of the United States and Supreme Court Justice?

Congratulations to each of you.  You have just read through the making of History for our Team!

 Romero's Rejects

Team Buzz (pictured below)
A note about this team.  We have been playing against them for more than a year now, if I recall correctly.  They played against us in other locations as well.  Always an honest team and I need to find out a little more about them before long.  I can say without a doubt, they are a good team.  When we see them, I know it's going to be a night of fun competing with them.

In 3rd place was "Hooker" and they jumped from near the bottom to 3rd on the final question.  beating out 2 other teams to take the win.
** Please note that I don't take much time to write out the entire name of teams, I write 1 or 2 words in the name and I go with it.  So the team names might not be exact to what they wish to be known by.  I'd say that I will do better about that in the future, however, I have NO plan to do that.  I'm happy with the simple part.  So if you want the name right in future blogs, keep it simply for me.** end of disclaimer...lol.

Last yet certainly not least.  I'd like to say Thank You so much for the prizes that Sidelines gives away at each game.  Take a moment to visit and Like them on Facebook

Thanks also to Chris and Ronni Bell for hosting every week and building up the amount of teams.

That's it for me.  It's another night of trivia, because it took me a week of trying to find time for the blog.  See you all again tonight, where we will bring our A game to win a 2nd week in a row!

A review of the winnings from Cinco de Mayo

Hey Everyone,

This is going to be a short blog post.  I wanted to say THANKS to Anthony and Nick from the team.  As you saw in the last blog, we won 2 prizes on Cinco de Mayo while playing at The Boot Pizzeria on south parkway.  One of those was a $40 certificate for a Banner and the other was $35 Adrienne's Salon.  The guys let me keep both prizes and I tossed around a few ideas of what to do with them.  This week, I took the banner certificate to Copperhead's Outdoors in Arab.  He doesn't have a banner and to be honest, I have gone out of town to get anything Archery related because I didn't know their was a business in town that carried those supplies.  So I stopped in for a visit and at first I think he thought that I wanted to sell him a Banner.  The look on his face when he realized I was simply giving him the free coupon was priceless.  As I was leaving, he told me that anytime my daughter wanted to use the indoor range this summer, there was no charge.  Now since she has made it to World, I'm thrilled with her being able to go in there and practice!  So it certainly worked out as a great benefit that I'm thankful for.

This past Thursday, I went to lunch at Carson's in Hampton Cove and had a nice meal.  It was my first time to visit there.  I shared an interesting conversation with a man who had served in the Vietnam war.  He talked some about his life now and the group therapy and how it had helped him with the PTSD.  He introduced himself by his first name and then told me that most of his friends just call him Gator.  Then showing me the tattoo on his upper right arm.  A few others sitting at the bar joined different parts of the conversation as we all ate at the counter.  The waitress was a young woman named Emily.  She was very courteous and seemed to know each of the regulars who sat down.  We spent some time talking and then it was time for me to go.
The nice thing is that I wouldn't even have been in that area if it weren't for the guys letting me have the coupons.  I left there and went to Adrienne's.  Where they did a great job with my being pampered and relaxed.  I enjoyed hearing about the business, learning how it was started and who's who.  My stylist was Adrienne herself.  She did a great job at making me feel comfortable and sharing stories back and forth as she work.  It seemed like no time at all and she was done.  I walked out with a credit, hair that felt Amazing and a feeling of happiness.  Sorry for the look in the picture, I was focused on getting the sign to line up and the sun was brighter than I had thought.  It's certainly a place I will go back and visit.

Thanks again to the guys on the Romero's Rejects Team for making my day so GREAT!
I really wouldn't have taken this time out if it weren't for your generosity.  I'm truly Thankful.
