November 14, 2013

On a last minute decision, I decided to head over to Las Trojas and play some trivia with Paul as the host.  He always does a good job and certainly has the voice for a microphone.  I called up Steve and he is on call at work, yet took enough time to come out and play too.  It was 19 teams in the all racing for 1st place.  So rather large teams and a few 2 person teams as well.  It is a whole different group than the ones we play against on Tuesday nights there.  We started out with a perfect score in round 1 and again in round 2.  However Round 3 proved to break our pride a bit.  I really need to learn some sports besides Bama Football...LOL.  It also would have helped to know what 1973 movie starred Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand.  http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/263781/Way-We-Were-The-Movie-Clip-It-s-Always-Bad-News.html

We did alright on the half time question and had 8 teams ahead of us and had passed the other 12 teams.  So we moved into the Rapid rounds with a fighting chance.  Scoring all 3 of those answers correctly.  Having heard the crowd get quite on the Winnie the Pooh question, we knew that we made a little more progress toward winning.  The question was, What birds home was blown away in Winnie the Pooh?  It might help to have it on video as I do.  It's the one called The Blustery Day.  I'm sure you all know the answer now :)

We blew Rapid round 5 and thus tanked our hope at a winning score tonight.  I did not know where the Negev Desert was located, however this would have helped as a clue:

I learned there is a fish that climbs trees & rocks.  This would be a Mud skippers, seen here: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/kids/animals-pets-kids/fish-kids/mudskipper-kids/

A fact we should have known was in 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes had the first telephone installed in the Mansion telegraph room of the White House.

Our final question of the night was What land animal has the largest heart?

This would be the one and only animal that needs it to pump all the way up the neck.

Our score tonight was not enough to beat the tough team "Loki's Brother"  who had an amazing time holding the lead though out the entire game.  It was fun and I needed the stress break after my day today.

Last and certainly not least, it was good to see Super Man playing tonight, even with the team "Kryptonite" playing against him.

I had a really good night of fun and that is what I play trivia for.  So win or lose, I'm happy to have had the chance for some time to relax and play.  I'm closing this one out and I hope to catch up the story from this past Tuesday, which was a real Blast of fun with the whole team!

Thanks to Paul our host and to Las Trojas for giving prizes.  I should also Thank BrainBlastTrivia for a good mix of questions.  This was the controversial question of the night:
  • Prince Harry of Wales
    Military officer
  • Prince Henry of Wales, commonly known as Prince Harry, is the younger son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and his first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales. His paternal grandparents are Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

  • Good Night All, See you tomorrow

    Our Team is Awesome

    Hello Everyone,

It's been a while since I have sat down to work on the blog.  Between work and learning some new skills, I've had very little time to sit in a quite room and write.  I thought tonight would be a good time for this.  I'm going to go back over the last few games of trivia real fast for everyone.  I have enjoyed playing every single game we have ever played.  The group of friends who show up and play have become more and more like family to me.  Since I don't spend much time with my own family, it's nice to have some really good friends.  I'm going to get on with the trivia now and off the "mushy chic stuff",  So here goes the recap for everyone.

Oct. 23rd at Bishop's Bar.  We Did good with the Characters & Classic TV, however we missed the current event and NASCAR.  In round 2 we aced it with a perfect score.  During the half time, we flipped 2 of the answers.  I really don't like having to get things in the correct order when it comes to sports.  I guess I need more time in my day to watch sporting events.  Oh well, the guys did good on getting the list together.  In round 3 we only missed the Science question.  For those of you who didn't know the Billboards top 100's 6th place, here is the link:  What does the Fox say
When we hit round 4 and the most important round, it was all but over for the rejects.  One of the questions was a 4 sided polygon, after much debating at the table, we handed in an answer.  We should have written:

    Quadrilaterals

The US State Capital with the highest altitude was San Fe New Mexico and while we knew that we should know this from having missed it once before, we went with Denver.  We now know that Denver is the 3rd highest.  So does anyone know what the 2nd one is?
Tonight I looked up Andrew Carnegie and found an interesting story about his life.  Here it is for those of you who are interested. http://www.biography.com/people/andrew-carnegie-9238756
The Final answer of the night we did get correct with it being IDES.  which brought us back up 30 points, yet not quite enough for the winning ticket.  1st place went to "All for One" and 2nd place to "The Roll Tide Rollers".

With the funnest thing I heard that night being the words..."I rebuke thee",  I thought I would roll laughing.  That was during a private conversation with only our table.  The most fun with an answer tonight was "George W. Bush, The smart one"

Thanks to Amber our waitress, who shared a little information about the table we sat at tonight.  She said that not 1 single team that had sat there ever won a game and that all the teams had tried that spot.  Guess next time we are going to switch tables and take over the one where the winners always sit.

Well that's it for tonight my friends.  No way I can stay up to fill you in on all the fun from different nights. I also didn't take the time to read back over this, so you get the rough draft on this one guys.   It's off to sleepy land for me.  If I hurry, I can get in some sleep before 5am wake up call.  Sleep well

    July 2012 Trivia

    July 3, 2012
Tonight's team: Steve, Owen, Mike and myself.
We were all geared up for the celebration tomorrow that we started enjoying the drinks a bit to early.  We started off missing the Fireworks question.  Continued on the downward spiral of missing some of the easy questions.  However the laughter was in full swing at the table and we were having a good time.  By the Final question, we were only at 39 points (we like to have at least 34 by half time)  So needless to say we bet it all on the Final question and as luck would have it, We lost that too...LOL  Our all time lowest score since we started the team!  After trivia we all went over to see Robbie at the WEG (as we call it) and had a few more drinks there.  BTW...Bad Idea took 1st place tonight.

    July 10, 2012
Players are: Andrea, Amanda, Steve, Owen, Justin, Amoreena, Tru and Myself.
Tonight we are playing against 16 teams!  Talk about some tough competition people, everyone came here to win tonight!  We only missed 1 question in the first 3 rounds of play and only lost 2 points during the half time round.  That was really good considering it was today's music hits.
We only missed 1 question in the next 2 rapid rounds, so we were looking good for the Final Question, feeling that we had the correct answer for sure, we bid the max.  The question was:  What was the best seller before 1936?  Anyone care to take a guess without google helping you out?  I'll get back to this in a few, just in case you are still thinking on it.  This is Andrea's first time playing with us, she is the young lady on the right.  She came out to visit me before her wedding (in 2 weeks), glad she could join us.
*Look for the answer to the question at the bottom of this post

    July 24, 2012
I'm not sure who was on our team tonight, for some reason, I skipped that part of the writing in my notes.  I'm guessing it was our core team.  I'm sure I thought I would blog before 6 months passed and I couldn't remember any more!
The questions were a bit tough, as we took 2nd place with a grand total of only 52 points. 3rd place winner was at 32 points and the 1st place team only had 59 points.

Well that complete's the month of July 2012 and brings me to the oversight of the June 12th game.

    June 12, 2012
We joined Owen and played on the "Gump's Geeks" team at the 3rd Base Grill over on South Parkway.
This game was a little different, yet I had a great time playing.  On our team was: Owen, Jim, Steve and Myself.  There are only 4 rounds here with 5 questions per round.  They give a prize at the end of each round and being the new team, Owen had to "show em what we got"  He did a good dance and the game is very relaxed here.  I wish I could remember the winning teams, however I know we won a couple prizes, the guys loved the beer win!  I wouldn't mind playing here sometime again. The only draw back is it's a smoking bar and I'm not a smoker.  I don't think anyone on our team tonight was either.  No matter, it was fun and we were out of there before the chain smoking started.  If you are reading this and think that I'm down on you for smoking, I'm NOT, I just don't want to be subjected to it in close quarters is all.  To each their own.

Now for that little matter of the *question that needs an answer.  How many of you looked it up?  Did anyone really bother to think about it?  Maybe you already know the answer?  If so, leave me a commit and I'll write the correct answer in the commit section over the weekend and YES, honest I will or Steve will do it for me..right Steve?

Ok, I've enjoyed writing and have to go now.  It's girls night out for D2 and I get to host.  Have fun everyone and get out of that little circle you are in and meet some new people, try some new foods and live your lives to the fullest.

Has it really been that long??

    Hello Everyone,

I had no idea I had left this blog for so long.  I knew I was working to much and trying to get so many things done.  Gosh, how to even start on catching you up to date.

I was having some health issues and did have surgery back in June 2012.  Of course I can't say that it made me not write, because I attended DeepSouthCon for the whole weekend.  I will admit I was not my normal energetic self at all, yet I had so much fun.

So here we go, going to give you the run down as best I can pull it together.

    May 10th, 2012
Steve, Bill, Herman and myself all played trivia.  There were 7 teams and we ended up in 4th place with the team DoubleDoors taking 1st place.

    May 15th, 2012
Again there were 7 teams.  Playing tonight was:  Mike, Owen, Steve, Nicole and myself.  We started off doing so good and held our own all the way until the Final Question of the night.  We came in 2nd place and if we had bid 0, we would have held on to 1st place.  You have to love the hindsight of it all.  Taking the first place win tonight was: Bad Idea with only 3 points more than us.

May 17th, 2012  Tonight Steve and I went over to Tommy's Pizza to support Mallory as she hosted the trivia in a new location.

Owen and Mike weren't up for the challenge tonight.  We didn't place tonight, yet we did have a lot of fun with some of the answers.  May I present your 1st place team:

    May 22nd, 2012
We played at Las Trojas tonight.  Steve, Owen, Mike, and myself.  Venton Blandin also joined us for the game.  We played good and there was a packed out house tonight.  We bid the max on the Final round and didn't place at all.  We did have fun and that was what really matters to me.

    May 29th, 2012
Tonight we had Steve, Mike and myself playing.  Mark has now joined the team, so everyone meet Mark
Glad to have you join us.

    June 19th, 2012

    Tonight I met Summer

& Steve, the new hosts at Las Trojas on hwy 53. They did a great job at hosting.

Owen, Steve (our Steve, not the host) and myself played against 9 other teams.  We took 1st place with a total of 93 points!  Felt GREAT to win.  I had us some shirts made, we will all be wearing them soon!

     June 26th, 2012
Our team tonight was Steve, Owen and Myself.
I didn't keep the best notes tonight as I can see.  I do know that Clemson Tigers took 1st place with 93 points and in 3rd place was Baker's Dozen.  From our scored, I can tell you we were behind going into the Final round and we bid the max and missed it.  So the only treasure we took home tonight was this napkin where we debated the Final Answer!

This brings us all the way up to July 2012 and I will start there either tomorrow or over the weekend and try to bring us all the way into this New Year!

So now I'm going to leave you with this look at our team shirts.  Thanks for reading and I will try not to let work take over my life.  Until next time...............

Trivial Knowledge OR Knowledge of Triva

Playing Brainblast trivia makes for a very good time. It gets you out of the house for a couple of hours to socialize with friends and if you have the right team mates, win some cool prizes.
For about an hour and a half, you are cut off from your cell phone so you don't have to worry about texts, incoming calls, and voice mails. Where we normally play, Las Trojas in Rocket City USA, known to many as Huntsville Alabama, we can enjoy a fine dinner and awesome drinks while we deliver the red a$$ to the opposing teams.
Our team has morphed over the last year or so we have been playing to include some awesome vessels of useless facts. Useless except when you are kicking butt at a Brainblast event that is.
If you are still working on building your team you should consider these simple tips.
First of all, it may seem like a great idea to have a bus load of people on your team. We have tried this a few times, and it does expand your knowledge base somewhat. Unfortunately though, it also makes for more distractions as people way down on the other end of the table can't hear what is being said on the other end. Obviously while debating the answer you need to whisper or talk in a low tone as to not help out the opposition.
There is also the problem of trying to divide up the winnings.
Our team captain. Sandy. came up with a good and fair way to do this, but it makes it much more difficult on large teams.
While we welcome anyone who would like to join us at anytime, we have pretty much decided that a mega size team isn't the best way to go.
What you need among your team mates is a couple of nerd fanboys. They seem to know trivia on movies and television shows pretty well.
Someone like Sandy, who I just mentioned, is a retired daycare provider and seems to have  a good knowledge of children shows and music from her years in that (what would have to be, Hellish) job. She is now a private investigator and brings in a vast array of info from that field.
We have a couple of engineers that play regularly with us, and of course that helps. They both are quite the history buffs and that is a tremendous asset.
One of our occasional team players, Bill, is very knowledgeable on musicals. Both Broadway and big screen. As disturbing as this fact was for all of us to find out, it has paid off on more than one occasion.
I am one of the fanboys I mentioned above. While I myself can not offer to much, their has been a time or two that a movie quote or Star Trek fact or something that only I knew the answer to was asked, and I was able to  contribute to a number one victory.
We have lucked out by having one team member who is truly the anchor of our team. Our teams Michael Jordan or Cam Newton. His trivial knowledge, er, knowledge of trivia is outstanding and he is always fun to hang with, win or lose. He knows who he is.
All of teams players are perfect for what we need. It makes for a great team experience.
The key to a winning team is diversity. You can never really pin down which direction Brainblast may be going that week, so your information sources should be from many fields.
Remember, the main thing is to have fun, and while losing is obviously not as much fun as winning, it is better than not playing at all.
Next time you find yourself in North Huntsville on a Tuesday night, drop by Las Trojas. Chances are we will be there. Go against us if you dare, or join us for the evening. It will be a blast.
